Jitu Miah, a resident of Mandarkandi village in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj, recently discovered while trying to enroll his child in a madrasa that his date of birth is listed as March 2, 1887, on his National Identity Card (NID). According to this, his age would be 138 years. However, his own father's current age is 75 years.
In reality, Jitu Miah is 38 years old. Due to this error on his NID, he was unable to admit his child to the madrasa. He has been visiting various government offices for the past five to six months to correct the error. Most recently, he submitted an application to the Nabiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) last Thursday. Jitu Miah’s father, Haris Miah, has a listed date of birth of March 1, 1950, which makes him 75 years old. This would mean Jitu Miah is 63 years older than his father.
When asked why he hadn't noticed the error earlier, Jitu Miah explained that he had been living abroad for a long time and didn’t need to use his NID much, so the mistake went unnoticed. The error came to light recently when he tried to enroll his 12-year-old son, and the madrasa authorities were the first to spot the discrepancy in his NID. Speaking to Prothom Alo on Saturday, Jitu Miah said he has been going from the Union Parishad to the Upazila Election Office and other departments for four to five months in search of a solution but has yet to receive any remedy. He made an affidavit last Tuesday and has now applied to the Nabiganj UNO to have his birth certificate corrected.
When asked about the issue, Upazila Election Officer Uttam Kumar Das stated that it is not possible to correct the NID without a birth certificate. The individual's online birth registration must also be corrected.
