An elderly man named Ekramul Munsi (48) has been accused of ra*ping a disabled young woman in Ranishankail, Thakurgaon. Allegations have also surfaced that a local BNP leader tried to settle the incident for Tk 6,000.
According to reports, on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 20, Ekramul Munsi lured the young woman with the promise of Tk 100 and took her to a cornfield, where he allegedly rap*ed her. The accused, Ekramul Munsi, is the son of the late Abdul Hamid of Bhedali village.
The victim stated that Ekramul offered her Tk 100 and took her to the cornfield. There, he forcibly raped her. When he tried to give her the money afterward, she started screaming, prompting Ekramul to flee the scene. Seeking justice for this brutal act, the victim’s father—a rickshaw van puller—went to file a case at the Thakurgaon court on the morning of Thursday, May 22.
However, it is alleged that Akhtar Hossain, the president of the local BNP unit of Ratore Union, intervened and forcibly brought the father back from court, settling the matter with a payment of Tk 6,000. The victim’s father stated that he initially sought justice through local arbitration but, failing that, proceeded to the court. But under pressure from Akhtar Hossain, his brother took him back from the court, and another arbitration was held that night. There, they were pressured to settle the matter for Tk 40,000. The family later walked out of the arbitration, saying they were denied justice.
